First Apartmemt

Our first apartment was 1219 Bartlett off Montrose.

Steve Treadwell and I had initially moved into this second floor, one bedroom, carpeted, air conditioned (!) apartment at the end of the summer of 1967. When Kathy and I decided to get married, Steve agreed, graciously, to move out and let us have the apartment. Our rent was an astounding $72.50/mo.

There were six units in the building. Next door to us were Jim Thelin, with whom I worked at the Houston Speech and Hearing Center, and Don Smith. They turned out to be really good friends and very supportive of the young couple.

We had two nicknames for this cul-de-sac. One was Little India, because there were a bunch of older apartment buildings with lots of Indian grad students. The fragrance of Indian food wafted on the air in the evenings. This was long before we were introduced to Indian food by our Brit friend, John Vivian, so we did not really appreciate the smell.

The other nickname was Poverty Pocket - self explanatory.

This is where Kathy made our first home cooked meal as a couple:
