Kathy For Real

Spring Break in ’67 saw the Clayton part of the Lucas family (Art, Betsy, Chris and Karen) traveling to Texas to spend a week with Tim and Kathy in Corpus Christi. They ended up in Houston and Tim called me to tell me that Kathy was in town.

I could not wait to see her and we spent the weekend doing fun stuff before she flew back to San Antonio. This weekend revived our tele-romance.

The photo on the previous page is her returning to her Dorn at Trinity. She is following the dress code from that period.

We wrote letters, made expensive phone calls and spent some weekends together. I would drive to San Antonio, gather Kathy from Trinity, drive back to Houston and drop her off to spend the weekend evenings at Elaine and Carol’s (these had been our neighbors in my first off campus apartment, remember?).

This photo shows her delivering a coke to me inside the common area of the MacFarlin hall. What a beauty!!!

Anyhow, on these weekend sojourns we would spend Saturday together including some kind of party in the evening before I returned her to sleep at E&C’s. Sunday would be another day to do some fun stuff before I drove her back to Trinity in time to make 10PM curfew and then drove myself back to catch some shut eye before going to class on Monday AM. Sure could not do this today. I recall the last part of the drive back to Houston where a demon on my shoulder would say, ‘The road is straight, the car is going straight, just close your eyes for a few seconds.’

It was during this semester that I decided to go to grad school in bioengineering. To do that I had to make the President’s Honor Roll from then on so I could get into a good grad school.
