Ice Cream
My dad loved home made ice cream and in the summer he would convince mom to indulge his craving every two or three weeks. We had a crank type ice cream maker.
This is not it, but it is really close to the one we really had. Mom would create the ice cream mix and then dad and I would do the cranking. Plenty of salt to allow the water around the ice cream container to go below freezing. Dad used one of the surplus #3 washtubs to keep the salt water out of the grass. I would crank in the early stages when the ice cream mixture was easy to agitate. When I could crank no more, dad took over and cranked like the dickens. When it was really ‘set up’ he removed the agitator assembly, sealed the top of the container and let the salty ice water complete the process of solidifying the ice cream. This was a real treat on a hot Sunday afternoon after church.
