Moncriefs
When we lived on Idylwood at least until the late 50s mom did not shop for groceries at the big chain stores: Weingartens or A&P. She shopped at a small grocery and butcher shop known as Moncriefs.
Moncriefs was located on Magnolia Avenue about 2/3 of the way to our house from downtown. It was probably less than 2000 square feet and it was relatively dark.
Two aspects of Moncriefs stick in my memory. One, we could run a tab and settle up at the end of the month. Two, mom could call in an order and they would pick the items, bag ‘em and deliver them. The delivery included bringing them inside the house, even when we were not there! They would even put refrigerated items in the ‘fridge.
I am writing this in September of 2020 during the time of Covid. Call in orders are popular and delivery is again available.
