This was the summer of my 14th year and I had a brand new driver’s license in my pocket. All I needed was a car. I had my heart set on receiving Luther’s early 50’s Dodge sedan. How fortunate this situation was going to turn out for me!
We make plans and God laughs.
One afternoon, Luther was driving, ALONE! He crossed the railroad tracks without seeing the oncoming train. The car was smashed to smithereens and dragged for about a block and a half. He was uninjured except for some bumps and bruises. It was a miracle.
There were several consequences of the wreck. The sisters were relieved of their challenge of confronting their father. Luther was no longer driving because he could not afford a new car. My conjecture was that he was uninsured. And…the big one for me…no car.
