One really unfortunate event occurred that summer of 1967. Nelson Hatt, Steve Treadwell and I had pistols to go shooting at the Barker reservoir. We were in Nelson’s Corvair.
On the way home we stopped at Foleys in Sharpstown so that Nelson could buy a TV. As Steve and Nelson went inside to get the TV, I was in the back seat of the Corvair. I pulled out the 9mm Luger to check that it was unloaded. It was in a sock. As I removed the sock, the sock clicked the safety off and snagged on the external firing pin release. The gun went off and the slug went through the tip of my left forefinger.
The guys took me to Sharpstown hospital where I got patched up.
This was a really stupid thing to have happened.
