We had two nicknames for this cul-de-sac. One was Little India, because there were a bunch of older apartment buildings with lots of Indian grad students. The fragrance of Indian food wafted on the air in the evenings. This was ong before we were introduced to Indian food by our Brit friend, John Vivian, so we did not really appreciate the smell.
The other nickname was Poverty Pocket - self explanatory.
