n the middle of the spring semester 1967 Tim located a Jaguar XK-120 Drophead coupe that he bought and got running. At the end of the school year he needed to get both his Valiant convertible and the Jag along with Kathy back to St Louis. He invited me to drive with them to share the driving. So I went to San Antonio and gathered Kathy and her stuff and then we loaded it all into the two cars and headed north on I45.
Kathy and I were in the Valiant convertible and he was in the Jag. Somewhere near Corsicana, Tim pulled over. He was whacked and wanted me to drive the Jag so he could doze while Kathy drove the Valiant. He had never let me drive the Jag before and I was all over the idea. Unfortunately the Jag was packed and the drivers seat was as far forward as it would go. I could scarcely fit into the space.
We resumed our travel northward. As we entered Dallas I45 ended and I darn near could not get the Jag stopped. I couldn’t get my leg and feet to clear the steering wheel enough to get onto the brake pedal. Luckily I contorted more and used the side of my foot and some muscles that were not designed to push sideways to get the beast stopped.
